Hello and welcome to the Palm Beach offshore fishing forcast for August. This is a great time of the year to do some deep water “run an gun” Tactics. Running and gunning means to head of shore at a high speed until you see some floating trash or large weed beds, then stop and start to throw some cut sardines around the area. If nothing comes calling start the boat up and start searching for the next spot. This method is used by the pros and can produce big fish, also look for bird. Birds have a keen eye for fishing. If you see a couple birds flying fast in one direction head that way. They’re probably going to meet some friends.
For you anglers that like to wreck fish pull out the big rod! Big Groupers, Amberjacks and nice muttons will be holding on the deep-water wrecks. If you don’t have any marks for the wrecks off Palm Beach, purchase a chart at your local bait shop. These charts have a lot of info and are somewhat easy to read. To catch one you have to have the right rig: # 9 hook, 15 ft of 80 lb leader on a three way swivel and a heavy sinker. Live bait is the only way to go. Goggle eyes and blue runners work great. Remember you can call you local bait guy on channel 68 on the vhf to buy some.
The inshore fishing is off the hook in August. The inlet will be holding Big Tarpon, Snook and jacks. Try anchoring to the south of the inlet on the out side. Chumming here is the key. When your anchored here make sure you have a floating ball to tie to the anchored line. When you get that big fish on your going to want to throw your anchor line over the side attached to the ball. This will get you on your fish fast. A big tarpon can have you on the other side of the inlet in no time. Well good luck, have fun and remember you can’t catch them from the couch.
